Star Wars: The Last Jedi

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is a 2017 epic space opera film written and directed by Rian Johnson. It is the eighth installment in the Star Wars saga and the second film in the sequel trilogy. The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio del Toro. It continues the story from “The Force Awakens,” focusing on the Resistance’s struggle against the First Order and Rey’s journey to understand her connection to the Force.
The film begins with the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), evacuating their base as the First Order closes in. Despite the successful evacuation, the Resistance suffers heavy losses, and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) leads a daring but costly attack on a First Order dreadnought. The Resistance fleet escapes into hyperspace but is soon tracked by the First Order, leading to a tense pursuit.

Meanwhile, Rey (Daisy Ridley) arrives on the remote planet Ahch-To, seeking to enlist Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the fight against the First Order. Luke, disillusioned and blaming himself for the rise of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), initially refuses to help. However, Rey’s determination and her growing connection to the Force eventually lead Luke to reconsider. Through their interactions, Rey learns more about the Force and Luke’s reasons for going into exile. Luke reveals that he had considered killing Kylo Ren after sensing the darkness within him, which led to Kylo’s turn to the dark side and the destruction of Luke’s Jedi temple.
Rey and Kylo Ren begin to communicate through the Force, experiencing visions of each other. These interactions reveal their inner conflicts and create a complex dynamic between them. Rey believes she can redeem Kylo Ren, while Kylo sees an opportunity to turn Rey to the dark side.

Back with the Resistance, fuel supplies are running low, and the fleet is under constant attack. Finn (John Boyega) and mechanic Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) embark on a mission to find a codebreaker who can disable the First Order’s tracking device. Their quest leads them to the casino city of Canto Bight, where they encounter DJ (Benicio del Toro), a skilled but morally ambiguous hacker. Despite their efforts, the mission ultimately fails, and DJ betrays them to the First Order.
In a desperate bid to save the Resistance, Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) sacrifices herself by ramming her ship into the First Order’s flagship at lightspeed, creating a massive explosion and allowing the remaining Resistance members to escape to the planet Crait. On Crait, the Resistance makes a final stand against the First Order. As the First Order forces close in, Luke Skywalker appears and confronts Kylo Ren. It is revealed that Luke is projecting his image across the galaxy using the Force, allowing the Resistance to escape while he distracts Kylo and the First Order. The effort ultimately proves fatal for Luke, who becomes one with the Force after ensuring the Resistance’s survival.

The film ends with the Resistance escaping aboard the Millennium Falcon, with Leia asserting that their fight will continue. Rey, having retrieved the ancient Jedi texts, resolves to carry on the Jedi tradition. The film also hints at the continued existence of the Force among ordinary people, as seen in a young stable boy on Canto Bight who briefly uses the Force to retrieve a broom.
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” explores themes of failure, redemption, and the nature of heroism. It challenges traditional notions of the Jedi and the Force, presenting a more nuanced view of good and evil. The film received critical acclaim for its bold storytelling, character development, and visual effects, though it also sparked significant debate among fans for its unconventional approach to the Star Wars mythos.

“The Last Jedi” grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. It played a crucial role in advancing the narrative of the sequel trilogy, setting the stage for the final installment, “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). The film’s legacy is marked by its willingness to take risks and redefine what a Star Wars film can be, making it a memorable and pivotal chapter in the saga.
